The Continental Army under General Washington and British forces under General Howe engaged in a series of battles for control of New York City and New Jersey during the American Revolution. The British gained control of the strategically important New York Harbor, New York City, and Long Island in 1776 and held them through the end of the war. Yet the Continental Army was able to retreat south through New Jersey and ultimately survive these campaigns.
